Ron Kennedy Scholarship
Ron Kennedy was the founder of BGC Kawarthas (formerly called Kawartha Youth Incorporated) in 1970. He exemplified each of the qualities identified in these awards. Ron was an artist and some of his works are displayed at Community Living. He cared about the environment and spent time teaching at youth camps. He was entrepreneurial and certainly willing to take risks. Ron was a humanitarian, devoting his life to troubled youth and those with special needs. He was a leader and people gravitated to him and his causes. Ron modelled a dedication to physical literacy before the term was even coined. And he was resilient in his own ability to overcome obstacles.
In honour of BGCKL’s 50th anniversary in 2020, Ron’s family developed a scholarship in his name and others have since contributed. One nominee, who is transitioning to post-secondary education or training in the next 12 months, will be chosen from the full slate of nominees.
Marcie Beall Scholarship
Established by Beall/Lough families in honour of Marcie Beall. A donor is matching donations up to $3,000.
We experience many stages of growth in our lives. Marcie was a shy child and often bullied however she was a solid friend and a welcome refuge to new classmates. Marcie grew into a strong young woman and embarked on her career as a youth worker to support her community. She worked at the BGC in the after school program, Warehouse and Day Care. While working in her final role with Support Services Marcie was diagnosed with a rare cancer. Marcie endured many months of surgery and chemo. She courageously shared her story while advocating for her health, leaving a positive impact on everyone she met. Marcie’s tireless spirit, ability to always smile and never give up is why this award is perfect to honour her.
The winner of the Club Spirit Award in the 18-24yr category will also receive this scholarship.
